This past month (November), we traded our six-wheeled home for a stationary life, settling in with some of our favorite people in Washington, DC. It was a refreshing change to stay in one place for a while, getting to know the area and enjoying quality time with family. The girls absolutely loved spending time with their aunt and uncle, singing daily renditions of Wheels on the Bus and giggling in a “big” bathtub. (We do have a small bath in the trailer that fits both girls)
Two local child-friendly spots quickly became our daily haunts. First, a cozy coffee shop with a giant sandpit filled with toys, and second, a local park. The park offered all the usual amenities but also had an unexpected bonus: outgrown outdoor toys left behind for everyone to enjoy. Imagine scooters, tricycles, and plenty of those yellow and red cars—Cozy Coupes, I think they’re called. The result? Absolute chaos (and pure giggles all around).

The library also became a favorite destination, thanks to its generous librarians who handed out lollipops and offered fun, toddler-friendly science classes. Tilly had her first swimming lessons! She excelled at dunking underwater and throwing the ball, though her starfish float could use a bit more practice. Her confidence was wonderful to see—though her chatty nature did make it a challenge for the teacher to get a word in!
Being stationary also allowed us to tackle some overdue chores: trips to the dentist, Amazon restocks, and random orders to prepare for the months ahead. Meanwhile, we spent our free time exploring DC itself. We strolled the National Mall, said hello to Washington and Jefferson, met friendly police horses, and visited the zoo, where the elephants stole the show with their charm and gentleness.
Gracie made the most of her temporary backyard, chasing squirrels with such dedication that she managed to hurt her paws from all those sharp turns on the concrete.
Halloween was another highlight! Tilly and Maggie had the best time trick-or-treating—not once, but twice—with their cousins. They thoroughly enjoyed running from house to house, filling their bags with sweets and treats.
As the days grew colder and our Fall Colours adventure came to an end, it was time to dust off the trailer and prepare for the next leg of our journey—heading to Ohio for Thanksgiving. With three days of travel ahead, including snowy conditions and mountain roads, we knew it wouldn’t be a simple drive, so we prepared as best we could. But, as we’ve learned on this adventure, sometimes you just have to keep going no matter what!
For these three days, we boondocked (free camping off-grid), relying on solar power, propane, bottled water, and our newly reunited best friend, the solar battery. Since we couldn’t carry water in the trailer water system due to freezing temperatures and the risk of frozen pipes, it was a minimalist setup.
Fortunately, it wasn’t too bad. Our trusty heater and warm, cozy blankets kept everyone snug, though the blizzard warnings did add some tension to the drive. Thanks to Will’s steady hands at the wheel, we made it safely to our overnight spot and were even treated to our first snowfall of the year.
Tomorrow (at the time of writing this), we’ll roll into Ohio, ready for Thanksgiving and another week of stationary life. For now, we’re grateful for warm blankets, a solid heater, and the lessons learned about RVing in cold conditions.
Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!
