Welcome to the second segment of our grand adventure! With the UK trip sadly behind us, we’re now chasing the brilliant colours of autumn (or fall) in New England. For anyone unfamiliar, New England is the northeastern corner of the U.S., which includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Think Gilmore Girls, lighthouses on the beach, cinnamon, apples, and lots and lots of leaves.
At the start of the week, we said a bittersweet goodbye to Karl and Lisa in Victor, New York, and hit the road to explore more of this stunning state—one that we have unexpectedly fallen in love with! The lush, green countryside, with its rolling hills, lakes, streams, and classic homes, has captured our hearts. This might now be one of my top favourite states! This week, we journeyed into the Adirondack Mountains—another well-known place I hadn’t heard of before. With over 3,000 bodies of water, including famous spots like Lake George and Lake Placid, the Adirondacks are a hidden gem in this area.

As we settled back into our nomadic routine, with jet lag finally behind us, we were once again reminded of why we chose to do this. A trip to Lake George’s beach turned into a long afternoon of splashing, swimming, and collecting shells in the last of the summer sunshine. Our visits to two famous forts were also a hit. Alice, however, was a bit irritated by how many times the British had to rebuild Fort Ontario due to those “pesky” countries destroying it (cue eye roll). Meanwhile, Tilly had a blast (pun intended) on our trip to Fort Ticonderoga, learning all about cannons and how they were used to shoot at the “baddies” on their ships!
Brief pause to prove Alice’s point:
- Built in 1755 by the British
- Destroyed in 1756 by the French
- Rebuilt in 1759 by the British
- Destroyed in 1779 by the United States
- Rebuilt by the British in 1782
- Given to the U.S. in 1796
- Destroyed by the British in 1814
- Rebuilt by the U.S. in 1839
One of the week’s funniest moments? Will took an accidental swan dive into the campsite’s brook. We’re still giggling about his soggy walk of shame back to the trailer!
As the weekend wraps up, we point our truck and trusty trailer toward Vermont—another state to tick off the list, and best of all, home to the Ben & Jerry’s factory. Flavour Graveyard, here we come! See you soon—we’ll probably be sick from ice cream and the first of many maple syrup taste tests to come! XX
