Pizza, Ice Cream Trains, and Reuniting with Old Friends

Our recent trip in and around San Luis Obispo was filled with memorable experiences and some valuable lessons. Along the way, we found a charming State Park campsite that offered us both a cozy place to stay and a learning opportunity about the importance knowing how long the Trailer actually is…31 feet + 5 feet of bike rack…the + being the key character there. The additional challenge of a rather tight and car filled road around the campsite meant some very impressive maneuvering. We managed to get in and out, though the worry about trying to get out without damaging cars, trailers, rocks, cacti and more the next day gave us a somewhat restless night.

Our next stop was at Lopez Lake, a truly beautiful spot. The lake was at its highest level in years, so much so that all the usual trails were submerged underwater. Despite the steep hills around the park, Tilly had a blast riding her Strider bike, zooming down the slopes with surprising control and confidence. The downside to the stay however was being too early in the year to enjoy the waterpark, next time!

In San Luis Obispo, we explored some of Will’s old hangouts from his University days. One highlight was a unique pizza place, Klondike Pizza, with an actual dust filled floor, famous for its elk meat pizza. For dessert, we visited an ice cream shop where an overhead train added a touch of magic to our visit. Maggie, having learned to mimic a train’s “honk honk” during our stay in New Braunfels, delighted in giving her arm a workout every time the train passed by.

San Luis Obispo, a beautiful picturesque California town. Was clean, welcoming, and everything we knew it would be. We had a great time visiting Will’s good friends and running with his old run group and Tilly had fun learning a Greek dance at the town market. Us adults, meanwhile, claimed we were too full from a delicious BBQ to join in!

Our adventure ended with a wonderful weekend spent with one of our favorite families. We caught up on old times, shared lots of laughs, enjoyed the trampoline, we made delicious s’mores, ate Chocolate Sundays at Ghirardelli’s, explored Monterey, getting absolutely soaked on the beach and having to walk some very wet and cold kids back to the cars.

Our time in San Luis Obispo was a short trip, but a perfect blend of new experiences and cherished memories. As we head North up the coast we know that it won’t be long till we are back.

Before ending this post, I must mention a surprising Campsite gem we found near Fort Hunter Liggett. This secluded campsite, primarily used by hunters, offered us a few peaceful and hot days. The friendly hunters shared fascinating stories about the camp during hunting season and frequently reminded us to “watch out for the Rattlers, I killed two this morning!”

See you soon SLO, go Mustangs!
