A Charming Retreat: Our Memorable Stay in Los Cerrillos

This part of our adventure deserves a whole blog post to itself. Nestled snugly in the heart of New Mexico, the small and friendly village of Los Cerrillos and the wonderful Cathy and Andie were our wonderful hosts for a fantastic long week.

Our adventure began with an attempt at an early morning walk around the village, in a bid to shake off the stiffness from the previous day’s travels. We moseyed along, accompanied by the usual morning chorus of chirping birds and yapping dogs alongside an unexpected welcoming committee. First up, a rooster with a ‘tude’ as the cool kids say, crowing his morning wake up to all. And hot on his feathery heels? None other than a pig. Yes, you heard that right, a pig. Not just any pig, mind you, but a hefty, no-nonsense chap who seemed to think he was the mayor of the village as he headed straight for Tilly. Will’s Dad mode kicking in as the pig came bike to piggy nose with her, and definitely 5 times her size. We later learned his name was Snickers, a farm piglet turned family pet… who was still growing…

With Cathy’s help we explored the beautiful city of Sante Fe and learnt all about its rich history and vibrant culture. Driving by many locations used for movie sets added a touch of Hollywood magic to our journey.

Our stay also included some adorable encounters with the village’s newest additions: baby goats! (Alice LOVES goats if you didn’t know that already) Their playful antics and innocent charm brought smiles and giggles to all our faces. The daily trips to see the Llamas was one of Tilly’s favourite things, along side picking up ALL the rocks from the road and waving at the never on time Amtrack train that came past us squarely during nap time each day.

During the finale of our trip we were lucky enough to experience the Annual Burro Race. A lively event where the whole village buzzed with people and Burros (Donkeys). We joined the locals in cheering on the determined and some not so determined participants as they dashed, as only Burros can, through the rugged and sandy terrain.

As I round up this post, I would be greatly amiss to not mention and thank the warm and incredible hospitality of the locals. Running alongside Tilly as she practiced on her Strider bike, giving pickles to the girls to keep them busy and showing her all the exciting things to see. They exchanged friendly greetings on the streets and in the local Mercantile and their genuine kindness made us feel right at home.

As we bid farewell to Los Cerrillos and its charming inhabitants, we left with hearts full of gratitude and wonderful memories . Our stay with Cathy and Andie was a true testament to the beauty of small-town living and the joy of connecting with others in the most unexpected of places.

We will see you again soon Los Cerrillos.
